The responsibility of public education is an important duty of the Fire Department and we make educating the community in fire and life safety skills a top priority. By coordinating a variety of public education and training programs, the Fire Department provides a valuable service to the community. With the combination of school visits, career fairs, attending public events, and station demos, the Fire Department is able to reach out to thousands of citizens each year.

Child Passenger Seat Program

Motor vehicle crashes are the leading killer of children in the United States. Many injuries and deaths can be prevented by properly using car seats. With four out of five seats misused, certified technicians provide a valuable service to parents and caregivers concerned with safe transport for their most precious cargo.

The West Sacramento Fire Department Child Passenger Seat (CPS) technicians put their knowledge to work through a variety of activities, including car seat checks where parents and caregivers receive education and hands-on assistance with the proper use of child restraint systems and safety belts.

To make an appointment for a car seat check-up, please click here, Car Seat Safety Check Request.

Parents have the best intentions for their children when they secure them in their seats and graduate them from infant seats to rear facing to forward facing to booster seats and ultimately the seat belt alone. Although it is ultimately the parent’s decision to change the child’s seating arrangement, there are vehicle codes that regulate child passenger safety.
